I can think of two embellishment techniques that you could explore... one simple thing would be stitching down ribbons in various configurations to the felt before folding and finishing, things like stripes, or interlaced to form checks or plaid. You could use bias tape in the same way. One other idea would be to do simple felt motifs appliqued either by hand or by machine. I vaguely remember having made a similar glasses case when I was younger that had the image of a pair of glasses appliqued on the outside. And you could use floral motifs, or seasonal ideas, or fantasy animals or, or... If I was going to try this myself, I might also do linocut block printed motifs on fabric "patches" that could be stitched to the various simple bags, as that is a way to easily get complex images
